A Waikato University MBA student has won a $5,000 Maori Battalion Scholarship to look at the behaviours, attributes and practices of emerging Maori leaders. Robyn Rauna, who’s based in Gisborne, is one of eight recipients of this year’s Ngarimu VC and 28 (Maori) Battalion Memorial Scholarship Awards. Her research will focus on governance members of her three iwi, Turanga - Rongowhakaata, Ngai Tamanuhiri and Te Aitanga-a-Mahaki.

Three University of Waikato graduates are poised to take on the world - by motorbike. Law graduates Rob Gray and Rob Climo have joined forces with Waikato management grad Mike Jacobson and two friends, Tom Anselmi and Misha Kravcenko, to complete a 25,000 kilometre motorbike journey from Vladivostok to London.

During times of crisis and controversy there are often calls for social change. This can involve getting people to change the way they act or behave, creating change in organisations and institutions, or sometimes making changes to regulations and the law. To make these changes happen it's important to get the right messages across at the right time. Dr Alison Henderson at Waikato University Management School specialises in communication about social change and says as individuals, organisations and governments struggle to manage resources and tackle climate and environmental issues it's become even more important to create the right kind of dialogue. For the first time, she's teaching a paper on the subject.

Former Waikato farmer and property developer Bill Flower has made a generous gesture to Waikato University. Ninety year old Mr Flower is offering a postgraduate student $30,000 a year for three years to study an aspect of New Zealand agriculture.

Waikato Management School staff Professor Delwyn Clark, Associate Professor Michele Akoorie and Dr Steven Lim have all won NZ Tertiary Teaching Excellence awards and are members of the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Ako Aotearoa Academy that has organised the workshop as part of a series of sector-wise initiatives to promote tertiary teaching excellence in the Waikato-Bay of Plenty region.

Two Waikato University academics, Associate Professors Ron Garland and Roger Brooksbank from Waikato Management School’s Marketing Department and Wayne Werder, CEO at Sport Bay of Plenty decided to survey golf clubs in New Zealand and Australia to find out whether they used strategic marketing as part of their long term strategy and whether it contributed to profitability and operational effectiveness.

A research paper which throws new light on why some new brands fail and others succeed has been named top academic article for 2009 by a leading Netherlands research centre. The paper, "Building Brands", which appeared in the prestigious international journal Marketing Science, is co-authored by Waikato Management School's Professor Harald Van Heerde, who has won a string of international awards for his research.

A Waikato Management School graduate with a winning streak has been awarded the prestigious Ministry of Defence Sword of Honour at the conclusion of her naval training last month. Along with this award, the highest honour, Emma Burtenshaw also won four other navy awards.
