China-New Zealand Tourism Research Unit

Aiding closer contact between New Zealand and Chinese Researchers & Industry

The China-New Zealand Tourism Research Unit is based at the University of Waikato, which is located in the city of Hamilton, New Zealand, close to some of New Zealand’s key tourism destinations.

The research unit offers excellent opportunities for Chinese students to conduct doctoral and masters research with some of the top scholars in both New Zealand and China.

Its members include Professors Chris Ryan (editor of Tourism Management – a top ranked SSCI journal),  Gu Huimin, Bao Jingang, Xu Honggang and others, including representation from the China Tourism Academy.

Students can conduct research in China knowing they may have local supervision as well as supervision from the University of Waikato. We offer personal supervision with two supervisors per student, with students forming a peer group cemented by a programme of seminars and social events. Please see here for details of our PhD programmes.

The research techniques used by staff include quantitative and qualitative methods, supported by the latest software.
